As girls’ flag high school football continues to grow in Massachusetts, the New England Patriots held a state championship by inviting eight of the top teams from around the state to Alumni Stadium on the campus of Boston College. The NFL team is working hard and investing in the sport in hopes that the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association will sanction it as an official sport. 15 states have already sanctioned girls flag high school football.
When the New England Patriots Foundation began in 2023, there were just eight teams in the state. Currently there are 51 schools playing the fast growing sport that will debut in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Last week, St. Mary’s won its second straight state championship by beating Leominster 14-13. Leominster won the first championship in 2023.
Here are the teams the participated in the Patriots’ third championship game — Ayer-Shirley Regional High School, Boston Latin Academy, Greater Lowell Technical High School, Leominster High School, New Mission High School, Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, St. Mary’s High School and Westford Academy.
