Michigan’s first-ever girls high school flag championship goes to St. Joseph. Sunday, the Bears beat top-seeded Brighton 21-20 in the Michigan Girls High School Flag Football Championship game at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions.
St. Joseph was the sixth seed in the seven-team tournament. The Bears beat Redford Union 26-8 in the quarterfinals and then Gibraltar Carlson 38-0 in the semis.
Since its inception, the Michigan Girls High School Flag Football League, organized by the Lions has grown from four teams during the 2023 pilot season to 24 teams in 2024 and 41 teams this spring.
Currently 15 states have sanctioned girls’ flag as an official high school championship sport.
